Sobre una blusa de cuello finamente plisada, esta mujer desconocida lleva una chaqueta forrada de piel (un 'Bürstlein'), que se ha atado con un cordón rojo. En su cabeza, tiene un gorro y un velo bastante anticuados, como los que usan las mujeres de la ciudad en el sur de Alemania. Su cara pálida destaca bien contra el fondo azul.
Durante mucho tiempo, la pintura fue atribuida al pintor alemán Hans Holbein , quien pintó retratos similares.
